Ukrainian Climber's Olympic Dream

Despite fleeing war-torn Ukraine, climber Jenya Kazbekova prepares for the Paris Olympics, showcasing resilience and determination amid personal and national struggles.

Ukrainian Climber's Olympic Dream

Ukrainian climber Jenya Kazbekova is preparing for the Paris Olympics, two years after fleeing the war in her homeland. Awakened by bombs falling outside her home in Kyiv, she barely had time to process the life-altering events.

"It was one of the most horrifying experiences I've ever had," Kazbekova recalled. She and her family joined millions escaping Ukraine after the Russian invasion in February 2022. They endured a grueling journey to Germany, facing long waits and exhaustion.

Climbing has been Kazbekova's constant amid the chaos, serving as her coping mechanism. Now residing in Salt Lake City, she trains for the boulder and lead events, while her family is settled in Manchester. Despite her move, she feels the weight of the conflict, with her grandparents still in Dnipro.

Her coach, Malik, who also fled war in Lebanon, has helped her find purpose in continuing her sport. "He made me realize how important it is to show up and possibly inspire others to care and support Ukraine," she said.

Climbing is a family tradition for Kazbekova, with her parents and grandparents competing internationally. This heritage kept her grounded during the war's first months. "Climbing is part of my family. It's what kept me sane," she noted.

Kazbekova aims to represent Ukraine proudly at the Olympics, emphasizing the importance of visibility and support for her country. "Being in Paris, wearing the Ukrainian uniform, and showing our resilience is a dream come true," she said.

She secured her spot in Paris through the Olympic Qualifier Series in Shanghai and Budapest. "We still need help and support. This fight matters," she concluded, highlighting the ongoing struggles in Ukraine and the significance of international representation.
